About

Dr. Faidon Nikiforiadis is the founding Director of the Building Simulation Lab ltd. He is a Chartered Architect, (ARB, RIBA, Int’l Assoc. AIA, TCG SADAS-PEA) and a Graduate Structural Engineer (IStructE). He has 25 years’ experience in the use of 3D CAD and 15 years’ experience in the use of BIM.

He holds an Architectural Engineering degree (Equivalent of a dual MEng / MArch) from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) (1996), a Doctorate in Architecture from the University of Sheffield, UK (2007) and a Certificate in Architectural Practice Management from The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London (UCL) (2008). In 2007 after completing his Ph.D. he was recognised by CIBSE and ASHARE as a Graduate Building Services Engineer (MCIBSE, MASHRAE). He is also a qualified BREEAM Assessor and a Member (MSLL) of the Society of Light and Lighting (CIBSE) and holder of its Diploma. More recently he has completed the online Certificate in Innovation of Products and Services: MIT’s Approach to Design Thinking from the Sloan School of Management at MIT.

Since his first graduation (1996) his practice teaching and research interests are focused in the interlinked areas of Architecture, Environmental Design, Modern Methods of Construction, Sustainability, Digital Design, Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Simulation. He has twenty years of professional experience both in academia and industry. He has taught and supported learning in Higher Education for several years in five different academic institutions in the UK (University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University Portsmouth University & University of Salford, and the University of Nottingham). He has worked in several architectural practices in Greece and the UK including Bond Bryan Architects in Sheffield. Overall he has worked in more than fifty architectural projects.

His Ph.D. at the University of Sheffield was in the area of Daylighting Environmental Modelling and Simulation in Urban Environments. Earlier he also worked (2004- 2005) as a Research Associate in the Sheffield School of Architecture under Ian Ward, the Director of the Building Energy Analysis Unit (B.E.A.U.). The research project was entitled, “Up-skilling designers of buildings in sustainable and low energy design”, and was funded by the Learning+Skills Council, European Union Social Fund.

In the period 2008 -2011 while working as a Senior Lecturer in Detailed Design & Environmental Technology at the University of Salford (Grade 8) he became the Founder and Programme Director of a new MSc in Low Carbon Building Design.

In 2012 he spent a year working as a Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham on a research project entitled, “The Climate Resilience of Modern Methods of Construction Dwellings”. He investigated the climate resilience of Modern Methods of Construction systems in order to support decision making for housing design, construction, and adaptation in a low carbon climate change future. The research was funded by a University of Nottingham ECRKT Award ended in October 2013.

In 2012, Dr. Nikiforiadis joined Sheffield Hallam University as a Specialist Visiting Associate Professor and presented a number of lectures and tutorials on environmental design and building simulation for the needs of the Diploma in Architecture, BArch and BSc in Architectural Technology courses.

In the period 2014-2015, he worked as a Research Fellow at Teesside University. The research project entitled, ‘Development of a whole life cycle approach enabled by BIM protocols and technologies for the Qatar Construction Industry’, was a collaboration between Teeside University, the Qatar University and the industrial leader in BIM, Hochtief ViCon in Qatar.

In April 2016 he founded the Building Simulation Lab a limited company that offers services in the areas of Design Thinking / BIM Integration / CAD & CAM / BIM & Building Simulation / Software Training / Consultancy / Design Research / R&D
